Opposition leader Ahmed Ould Samba was sentenced to one year in prison, including eight months of mandatory imprisonment, by the correctional chamber of the Nouakchott-West court on Thursday, May 29.
The prosecution had requested the maximum sentence of two years for the opposition figure, who was being prosecuted for comments made on social media. In a controversial post, Ahmed Ould Samba accused President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani of pursuing "racist and corrupt" policies. Ould Samba's defense team, which was unable to secure provisional release for its client, described the conviction as a "serious violation" of the Constitution, contradicting its articles guaranteeing freedom of opinion, expression, and thought.
Ahmed Ould Samba has been in pre-trial detention since January 16, 2025, accused of having "insulted the President of the Republic" in a Facebook post, according to his defense team.
