This case of Steeve Amoussou, aka *Brother Hounvi*, highlights the intensifying crackdown on dissent in Benin, particularly targeting cyberactivists and journalists.
The Arrest and Allegations
Amoussou was reportedly abducted on August 12, 2024, in Lomé, Togo, by unidentified individuals before being transferred to Benin. His arrest shocked many, revealing his true identity for the first time to the general public. He is now facing serious charges at the Court for the Repression of Economic Offenses and Terrorism (CRIET), including:
- Electronic harassment
- Incitement to publish false news
- Direct provocation to rebellion
His detention at Missérété civil prison ahead of his October 7, 2024, hearing has raised further concerns about press freedom and political repression in Benin.
Opposition and Public Outcry
Human rights organizations, legal defenders, and opposition figures have condemned the arrest, calling it an unlawful abduction and an attempt to silence government critics.
“The widespread indignation provoked by this shameful kidnapping has surprised and upset only those whose interests are in opposition to those of our valiant people,” said Guy Mitokpè, spokesperson for the opposition.
His lawyer, Victorien Fadé, anticipated his detention, given the level of state involvement in the case. Meanwhile, rights organizations argue that the charges reflect a broader pattern of intimidation against critical voices.
Implications for Press Freedom and Civic Space
Amoussou’s case adds to the growing list of journalists, activists, and union leaders facing prosecution in Benin under President Patrice Talon’s administration. The use of CRIET—originally meant for tackling economic crimes and terrorism—to prosecute dissenters has drawn international criticism, raising fears of escalating repression.
As the October 7 hearing approaches, activists and opposition members continue to call for Amoussou’s release, while the government remains firm on its stance against what it deems destabilizing rhetoric.
