The SENS movement had planned a demonstration on April 12, 2024, in front of Burkina Faso’s national security headquarters to demand the release of Maître Guy Hervé Kam, the movement’s national coordinator and a prominent civil society leader. Kam was “kidnapped” in January at Ouagadougou airport, according to the movement.
However, the demonstration was ultimately cancelled after authorities denied authorization, citing the suspension of political activities and the chosen protest site as justification. In response, the SENS movement expressed surprise and frustration, criticizing what they called the “frivolity” of the government’s reasoning for the ban.
This incident highlights growing restrictions on civic space and freedom of assembly in Burkina Faso, as well as the targeting of opposition voices and civil society activists.
