On July 12, Youssouf Daba Diawara, former coordinator of the now-dissolved Coordination of Movements, Friends, and Sympathizers of Imam Mahmoud Dicko (CMAS), was forcibly removed from his car by armed men and taken to the Criminal Investigations Brigade of the Gendarmerie.
Three days later, on July 15, he was brought before a judge and charged with “opposing legitimate authority” for his participation in an unauthorized protest on June 7. His trial is scheduled for October 3.
CMAS, which was dissolved by Mali’s transitional authorities in March 2024, was known for its critical stance toward the government. Diawara’s arrest has raised concerns among civil society groups about increasing restrictions on political dissent and freedom of assembly.
His supporters argue that the charges against him are politically motivated, while authorities maintain that his participation in the protest violated regulations. The case is being closely watched as tensions between the government and opposition figures continue to rise.
