French Journalist Olivier Dubois Abducted in Mali

On April 8, 2021, French journalist Olivier Dubois was abducted in northeastern Mali by the Support Group for Islam and Muslims (JNIM), a coalition of armed groups affiliated with Al-Qaeda.

For nearly two years, little was known about his fate. However, a video released on March 14, 2023, by his captors provided some confirmation that he was still alive. This was the first video of Dubois since a previous one released on May 5, 2021, a month after his abduction.

Dubois, who was based in Mali, worked as a correspondent for Libération, Le Point, and Jeune Afrique. At the time of his captivity, he was the only known French citizen held hostage anywhere in the world.
