Ghana’s police have come under criticism for their handling of journalists covering the recent protests near the Jubilee House in Accra. According to Accra-based JoyNews, officers interrupted an on-air interview with a protester, forcibly hauling away the interviewee while pushing aside the reporter, Maxwell Agbagba.
The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) has condemned the attacks on both protesters and the press, expressing dismay at the police's hostility toward journalists. Among those affected was a Metro TV reporter who was assaulted, while BBC journalist Thomas Naadi and his cameraman were arrested in what has been described as an indiscriminate crackdown.
Metro TV’s Bridget Otoo also shared her ordeal in a widely circulated YouTube video, revealing that her dress was ripped off by officers during the chaotic scenes. The police actions have sparked concerns over press freedom and the right to peaceful protest in Ghana.
