The police have arrested and are harassing Noah Dameh, the Deputy Station Coordinator of Radio Ada, a community radio station in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana, over charges of false publication.
The charges stem from a Facebook post by Dameh on May 8, 2022, following a complaint by ElectroChem Ghana Limited, the company granted a controversial concession to mine salt in Ada. Dameh was invited by the Tema Regional Police Command on May 24, 2022. He arrived at 11 a.m. and was kept in custody until 5:45 p.m., when he was released after being made to write a statement.
Dameh is the lead producer of the “Manor Munyu” program on Radio Ada, which focuses on the salt mining industry and other development issues in Ada. He also runs a blog covering local development concerns.
The salt mining industry in Ada has been fraught with tensions since ElectroChem Ghana Limited was granted a license to mine salt on an industrial scale in the Songhor Lagoon at Ada.
