The Malian government has dissolved the Observatoire pour les élections et la bonne gouvernance (Elections and Good Governance Observatory), citing financial irregularities and public order concerns. The decision was announced in a Council of Ministers statement on December 20, 2023, following a request from the Minister of Territorial Administration and Decentralisation.
According to authorities, the organization failed to provide financial records of its past projects and did not submit activity reports in line with strict regulations introduced in December 2022 governing NGOs and civil society groups. Additionally, officials accused the observatory’s president, Ibrahima Sangho, of making statements that could "disturb public order," specifically regarding voter participation in the June 2023 constitutional referendum.
Sangho had also publicly questioned the postponement of elections in early December, arguing that conditions were in place to hold elections by March 2024. Some observers have criticized the government’s decision as excessive, suggesting that a warning or temporary suspension would have allowed the organization to address compliance issues.
