On January 14, 2024, Guinean authorities deported French freelance journalist Thomas Dietrich, who was investigating an alleged embezzlement scandal at the national oil company. Officials accused him of entering the country illegally, a claim Dietrich refuted, stating that he had entered Guinea with a valid visa and was never provided with a written explanation for his expulsion.
Police officers arrested Dietrich at his hotel in Conakry, confiscating his phones and computer before interrogating him about their contents. While he was eventually able to retrieve his phone, his other equipment remained seized.
His sudden deportation adds to growing concerns over press freedom in Guinea, where journalists have faced increasing censorship, harassment, and restrictions under the current military-led government.
