As Secretary General of the Syndicat des Professionnels de la Presse de Guinée (SPPG), a media professionals’ trade union, Sékou Jamal Pendessa has been at the forefront of resisting media repression in Guinea, particularly under the current military regime. His outspoken stance in defense of press freedom has made him a target of harassment by the junta and its allies.
In a statement issued on June 3, 2024, Pendessa’s lawyers revealed that threats against him have intensified since May 22, 2024, when he publicly rejected the government's proposal to establish a self-regulatory media body. On the same day, authorities revoked the licenses of several private radio and television stations—a move that Pendessa strongly condemned in subsequent media interviews.
“Since then, Mr. Pendessa has observed suspicious individuals loitering around him and his residence without any lawful justification,” the lawyers stated, warning that such intimidation tactics are both illegal and unacceptable.
The statement further emphasized that Pendessa, as a trade union leader and public figure, remains fully prepared to comply with legal summons and due process. However, the continued threats against him reflect a broader pattern of government attempts to suppress dissenting voices in Guinea’s media landscape.
