The civil society organization Touche Pas à Ma Nationalité (Hands Off My Nationality) has been struggling to obtain official recognition as an NGO since August 2012. Despite multiple attempts, the organization has been caught in bureaucratic limbo, repeatedly sent back and forth between the Interior Ministry and the police prefecture, with no resolution.
The lack of legal status has severely hampered the group's ability to operate, limiting its ability to advocate for the rights of Black Mauritanians facing discrimination and statelessness. In addition to administrative obstacles, authorities have actively repressed the organization's activities, preventing it from conducting its advocacy and outreach work effectively.
The continued refusal to grant registration reflects broader restrictions on civil society in Mauritania, where organizations addressing racial discrimination, human rights violations, and political reform often face government obstruction.
