Between March and April 2024, courts in Ouagadougou ordered the release of a detained human rights lawyer. However, upon his eventual release near his home on May 29, 2024, a group of armed men abducted him and took him to an unknown location.
On June 1, 2024, he appeared before a military court, where he was accused of ‘undermining state security’. He was subsequently released under judicial control on July 10, 2024. However, on August 2, 2024, following a hearing before the military prosecutor, he was taken into custody once again.
This series of arbitrary detentions and judicial harassment underscores the escalating crackdown on human rights defenders in Burkina Faso, particularly those advocating for justice and accountability.
