The Malian government has officially banned the activities of the Swiss humanitarian organization Geneva Call (Appel de Genève), citing "illegal activities," according to a ministerial decree issued on December 15, 2022, by the Minister of Territorial Administration.
The decree does not specify the nature of the alleged violations, but reports suggest that the decision may be linked to Geneva Call’s recent engagement with the Coordination des Mouvements de l'Azawad (CMA), a coalition of former rebel groups. The organization had reportedly invited CMA representatives to Geneva for the signing of an “act of commitment” pledging respect for humanitarian law, particularly regarding the protection of health workers in conflict zones.
Geneva Call specializes in promoting the protection of civilians in conflict situations by engaging with non-state armed groups to encourage compliance with international humanitarian law. The move to ban its activities raises concerns about the humanitarian space in Mali, where violence and instability have intensified since the military took power in 2020.
