This move by Malian transitional government appears to be another step in tightening press restrictions and limiting foreign media access in the country.
Foreign press correspondents from RFI, France 24, BBC, AFP, Le Monde, Jeune Afrique, and others were summoned to the Ministry of Communication for an "information meeting" on Monday. While press accreditation had rarely been a strict requirement before, the government now intends to impose stricter accreditation rules, making it harder for journalists to obtain credentials.
During last week's meeting, officials failed to provide clear details on the new accreditation process, leaving journalists uncertain about the implications for their work. This "meeting" comes a few days after a letter from the "Collective for the Defense of the Military", a group close to the junta, accusing the correspondents of
@RFI& @FRANCE24 of "disinformation and intoxication" and demanding the withdrawal of their accreditation.
