Bamako, Mali –Mohamed Youssouf Bathily, popularly known as “Ras Bath”, continues to face legal persecution despite being acquitted of initial charges. The well-known radio and television host, who also serves as the spokesman for the civil society group Collectif pour la défense de la République (CDR), appeared in court again on July 11, 2023, months after his detention in March 2023.
Ras Bath was originally arrested and placed under a committal order on March 13 for allegedly “simulation of an offence”, following his claim that former Prime Minister Soumeylou Boubèye Maïga, who died in custody, had been killed rather than dying of natural causes. While he was acquitted of that charge, he was not released. Instead, authorities immediately charged him with a new offense: “harming the credibility of the State.”
The case has drawn widespread criticism, with civil society groups and press freedom advocates condemning the authorities' relentless pursuit of Ras Bath. His continued detention raises serious concerns about freedom of expression and the shrinking civic space in Mali under the current transitional government.
