Bamako, Mali – The Malian media regulator, the High Authority for Communication (HAC), has issued a formal notice to Joliba TV News, accusing the television channel of making "defamatory statements" against authorities and spreading "unfounded accusations."
The warning follows the broadcast of an episode of the program Editorial on September 30, 2022, during which journalist Mohamed Alidou Attaher expressed concerns about the state of freedom of expression in Mali. He criticized the HAC for its silence regarding alleged violations of free speech and also took aim at interim President Abdoulaye Maïga, referencing his speech at the United Nations General Assembly on September 24, 2022.
During the program, Attaher argued that press freedom was under increasing threat in Mali and urged authorities to take a stand against the growing restrictions on independent journalism. His remarks, however, were met with strong disapproval from the government, leading to the formal notice issued against Joliba TV News.
