Malian authorities have arrested Issa Kaou N’Djim, a former deputy speaker of the transitional assembly, over what they described as “extremely serious” remarks made against Burkina Faso’s ruling junta during a live television debate.
The arrest, which took place in Bamako, came after a formal request from Burkina Faso’s Superior Communication Council. During his appearance on Joliba TV on November 11, N’Djim accused Burkina Faso’s leadership of fabricating coup plots—a claim that has sparked tensions between the two neighboring military-led governments.
The incident highlights growing regional repression and the increasing collaboration among West African juntas to silence dissent and criticism. It also raises concerns about freedom of speech and the political climate in Mali and Burkina Faso, where opposition voices and journalists face heightened risks.
