Three journalists from Radio Sahara FM, based in Agadez, were arrested twice by law enforcement between May 7 and 10.
Hamid Mahmoud, Massaouda Jaharou and Mahaman Sani, journalists at Sahara FM, a station belonging to the Aïr Info press group, were first arrested between Wednesday 7 and Thursday 8 May 2025 by the police, before being presented to the investigating judge on Friday 9 May.
They are accused of relaying information published by the LSI news website, which alleged a breakdown in intelligence cooperation between Niger and its partners Russia and Turkey. Following their hearing, the judge ordered their release, as no charges were brought against them.
A few hours later, during the night from Friday to Saturday, the three journalists were again arrested by the gendarmerie at around 1 a.m. for Ms. Massaouda, and around 7 a.m. for Hamid and Mahaman. They have since been in the premises of the Agadez gendarmerie where, according to the latest information this Saturday at midday, they are being questioned.
On May 14, Agadez gendarmerie transferred the three journalists to the research brigade of the gendarmerie of Niamey, Niger’s capital.
