Senegalese media associations warned Tuesday of the parlous state of the industry, with several publications facing closure and jobs at risk because of political pressures.
Two of the country's most widely read sports dailies, "Stades" and "Sunu Lamb", have suspended publication after more than twenty years of battling economic difficulties, their publisher announced last weekend.
Other media outlets are expected to throw in the towel for similar reasons, according to the Coordination of Press Associations (CAP), which lamented "a serious crisis in the sector".
The CAP said in a statement it "is very concerned about the very difficult situation that the media sector is experiencing in Senegal".
The association said press companies face various pressures from the authorities including tax audits, formal notices to pay royalties, as well as termination and suspension of commercial agreements with public bodies.
Following March's election of Bassirou Diomaye Faye as president on a promise of radical reform, the new authorities "have certainly found a sector in agony whose reform process has been deliberately truncated by the former holders of power," said the CAP.
