Authorities in Togo have continued to restrict civic engagement, banning two planned meetings of the Grand Mouvement pour la Refondation du Togo (GMC), a social movement advocating for political and governance reforms.
On February 21 and March 21, 2024, the Ministry of Territorial Administration prohibited GMC from holding its ‘Citizen’s Café’, a public forum designed to discuss national issues. Officials cited the movement’s “lack of legal status” as the basis for the ban.
The move is part of a broader trend of increasing restrictions on civil society and political opposition activities in Togo. In recent months, authorities have cracked down on press conferences, workshops, and other gatherings, often using intimidation and force to disperse participants.
The bans on the Citizen’s Café events have sparked concerns about the shrinking civic space in Togo, as activists and civil society groups continue to face obstacles in their efforts to engage the public in discussions on governance and democracy.
