EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Closing Spaces for Democratic Engagement and Civil Society in Nigeria

Beginning from November 2016 to April 2017, SPACES FOR CHANGE launched a systematic inquiry into Nigeria’s legal regimes for combating money laundering and the financing of terrorism in order to understand if any connection exists between the country’s compliance with FATF’s Recommendation 8 and the shrinking spaces for civic engagement and civil society operations in Nigeria. The inquisitorial gauged the effectiveness of the implementation of national frameworks for countering ML and FT, highlighting where high risks remain or where implementation could be enhanced. The findings of this research are documented in the report:  Closing Spaces for Democratic Engagement and Civil Society in Nigeria.
