Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has been rearrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) barely a month after his initial detention. He was picked up by the CID on October 8, 2025, and held for several hours before being granted bail set at GH¢1 million, which was secured by three sureties. This marks the second time in less than a month that Abronye has been taken into custody.
His first arrest took place on September 8, 2025, after which he was arraigned before the Accra Circuit Court on September 9 on charges of offensive conduct conducive to the breach of peace. The court denied him bail at that time and ordered his remand in police custody, with the case drawing national attention amid claims of political bias and persecution.
Following his re-arrest, Abronye and his lawyers described the repeated detentions as politically motivated, insisting that the charges were an attempt to silence him for his outspoken political commentary. After his release, he accused the CID of unprofessional conduct and vowed not to be intimidated by what he termed as politically charged harassment.
Earlier, the NPP’s National Youth Organiser, Salam Mustapha, had criticised Abronye’s initial remand, accusing the Inspector General of Police of abusing his office and treating NPP members unfairly compared to opposition figures. The controversy around Abronye’s arrest and re-arrest has heightened political tension, with supporters claiming the police action violates his right to free expression and is part of a broader campaign to intimidate ruling party members who express dissenting views.
