During the opening ceremony of the National People’s Party (NPP) office in Bansang on September 29, 2023, Gambian President Adama Barrow launched a verbal attack on independent media outlets, according to the Gambia Press Union (GPU).
Barrow specifically mentioned Kerr Fatou and Mengbe Kering, two online media platforms, stating that their existence was proof of democracy in The Gambia. He went further, suggesting that without democracy, these outlets and critical radio stations would not be allowed to operate.
The remarks have raised concerns among journalists and press freedom advocates, who view them as an attempt to intimidate independent media and discourage critical reporting.
