Police fired tear gas in Cotonou, the economic capital of Benin , on Saturday, April 27, to disperse a protest against the cost of living organized by trade unions in Cotonou. Small groups of protesters had initially gathered before being surrounded by police who then dispersed them by firing tear gas.
The Confederation of Autonomous Trade Unions of Benin (CSA Benin), one of the largest movements in this small West African country, reported on X that its leader Anselme Amoussou had been arrested by the police. According to a union source, a dozen protesters were arrested.
