Abdou Khadre Sakho, a journalist with Senego, was detained on August 14, 2023, after being summoned by the Dakar Criminal Investigation Division. He was charged with “disseminating false news” and “engaging in actions likely to discredit state institutions.”
His arrest followed the transcription and publication of an interview with Ibrahima Fall, chairman of the Association for the Support and Social Reintegration of Prisoners (Asrad). The interview, originally conducted by another media outlet, Sans Limites, featured Fall alleging that negotiations were taking place between opposition leader Ousmane Sonko and state authorities. He also claimed that Sonko, who is the mayor of Ziguinchor, was advised to seek medical treatment in Guinea-Bissau.
Sakho was released on August 16, 2023, and his case was dismissed. His detention adds to growing concerns about press freedom in Senegal, where journalists have increasingly faced legal pressure for their reporting.
