A Kogi State High Court sitting in Lokoja has ordered that activist and social media commentator, Onimisi Farouk Ozigi, be remanded in police custody pending the hearing of a cyberstalking charge filed against him by the Nigeria Police Force.
The case was adjourned until Thursday after the court declined the prosecution's request to remand Ozigi at the Federal Correctional Centre in Koton Karfe, Kogi State.
Speaking after Wednesday's proceedings, Ozigi said the prosecution had sought his remand at the Koton Karfe custodial facility, but the trial judge declined the application, noting that judges would be proceeding on vacation next week.
According to him, the judge instead exercised his discretion by fixing the matter for hearing the following day and ordered that he remain in police custody.
"I'm to be remanded again, for hearing tomorrow," Ozigi said
"The prosecutor brought a one-count charge.
"He even said I be remanded in Koton Karfe but the judge told him since the judges are going on vacation next week, he can't grant their application, so the judge used his discretion to book for hearing tomorrow that I should be in police custody.
"The real count is now the vote of no confidence written against the Accountant General.
"The judge even questioned the prosecutor on why he wants me remanded in Koton."
A court document seen by SaharaReporters shows that the Commissioner of Police is prosecuting Ozigi in Charge No. HCL/42C/2026 before the High Court of Kogi State sitting in Lokoja.
The sole charge accuses the 33-year-old of cyberstalking, contrary to Section 436(1)(b) of the Kogi State Penal Code, 2019.
According to the charge, Ozigi allegedly sent or caused to be sent "on different social media platforms" statements contained in an attached Schedule A, which prosecutors claim he knew to be false and which were directed against the Kogi State Accountant General, Hajia Habibat Onumoko.
The prosecution alleges that the publications were intended to cause "annoyance, inconvenience, danger, obstruction, insult, injury, criminal intimidation, hatred, ill-will, or needless anxiety" to the Accountant General.
The charge, dated May 4, 2026, was signed by S.I. Ikutanwa, Head of Legal Prosecution at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Lokoja.
The fresh proceedings come months after SaharaReporters reported that Ozigi's family alleged he had been abducted from his residence in Kubwa, Abuja, and taken to Lokoja under controversial circumstances.
His relatives had claimed that the arrest followed a petition allegedly written by the Kogi State Accountant General, Onumoko, in connection with Governor Usman Ododo.
According to the family, Ozigi was taken from his Abuja residence on April 24, 2026, and transported to Kogi State without any immediate explanation to his relatives.
His sister described the operation as an abuse of power, alleging that the family was initially unable to establish his whereabouts or communicate with him.
The family also raised concerns over Ozigi's health, noting that he is asthmatic and depends on regular medication.
At the time, they appealed to Nigerians, human rights organisations, the media and relevant authorities to intervene, demanding that he be produced, granted access to medical care and treated in accordance with the law.
The matter is expected to come up for hearing on Thursday.
