The reasons for this decision were not mentioned. However, it comes after several statements hostile to the current transition, made by the president of this party, Dr Oumar Mariko, in exile for almost a year.
He had been missing since January 2023 after calling for an investigation into the events in Mourrah, a town in the centre of the country where a massacre of civilians allegedly took place in March 2022, according to several human rights organisations. In particular, Human Rights Watch and the UN accuse “Malian soldiers and Wagner paramilitaries” of being responsible. An accusation dismissed out of hand by the transitional authorities who denounced “biased (…) investigations based on a fictitious story and not meeting established international standards”.
Subsequently, Dr Oumar Mariko also spoke out against the entry of the Malian army into Kidal, considering this to be a violation of the Peace Agreement signed in 2015.
