Authorities arrested prominent blogger and whistleblower Mohamed Ould Yacoub in May 2022 following a complaint from the Mauritanian Investment Bank (BMI). His arrest has raised concerns about press freedom and the right to free expression in the country.
Ould Yacoub came under scrutiny after a Facebook post in which he highlighted the plight of a friend who allegedly discovered counterfeit 1000 ouguiya notes among 400,000 old ouguiyas withdrawn from BMI. According to the blogger, when his friend attempted to report the issue and request a replacement, the bank refused without providing any justification.
Despite maintaining that his post was not an accusation of bank fraud but merely evidence of a specific incident, the bank filed a complaint, leading to his arrest. The case has drawn criticism from activists who view it as an attempt to silence dissenting voices and limit online discourse on financial transparency.
