Journalist Newton Ahmed Barry was sentenced to two months in prison and a suspended fine of 250,000 CFA francs for defaming the Minister of Defense, General Kassoum Coulibaly. The information was provided by AIB, which cites sources close to the case.
As a reminder, the Minister of Defense and Veterans Affairs, General Kassoum Coulibaly, had filed a complaint against journalist Newton Ahmed Barry in November 2023. Indeed, the journalist exiled in France since September 2023 for security reasons, had accused the minister on his Facebook page of having made a fraudulent deal with a certain Ibrahima Maiga, for more than a billion CFA francs for the acquisition of 30 pick-ups for the army.
On December 29, 2023, the correctional chamber of the Ouaga I High Court found Newton Ahmed Barry guilty of defamation. He was sentenced to two months in prison and a fine of 250,000 FCFA, all suspended. The journalist should also pay General Coulibaly 500,000 FCFA in damages and 500,000 FCFA in costs incurred and not included in the costs. The court also ordered the deletion of the incriminated writing.
