Policemen from the Federal Capital Territory Command on the 22nd of September 2016 clashed with members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, who were protesting against the continued detention of their leader, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky in Abuja. The policemen fired tear gas canisters at the Shi’ite members during the encounter in which a policeman was injured.
The FCT Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Mustafa, said the protesters were dispersed because they had no police permit to stage a public protest in the city.
