Description

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu has been in detention since October 2015. He was arrested by the SSS in October 2015 for criminal offences and charged to a Magistrate court. Despite being granted bail by a Magistrate Court headed by Magistrate Shuaibu Usman and a Federal High Court headed by Justice Adeniyi Ademola in December 2015, he has remained in detention.

Actions Taken

The prolonged detention of Mr Nnamdi Kanu has had ripple effects, particularly for supporters of his pro-Biafra led movement, IPOB. His prolonged detention has led to needless deaths, extrajudicial killings and it has crippled economic activities in several instances. For instance, on the 23rd of September 2013, a worldwide Sit-at- Home protest was called by Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, against the continued detention of its leader and Director of Radio Biafra Mr. Nnamdi Kanu. According to reports, the protest was complied with totally by residents of Onitsha and Nnewi, perceived to be the strong base of the group and its leader.
