The Ekiti State Police Command has arrested and commenced investigation into some of its officers accused of extortion, intimidation, disobedience to lawful orders and other acts of unprofessional conduct during a stop-and-search operation in the state.
The command disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, following a complaint filed by representatives of the Biker Association, Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) Chapter.
A video showing the encounter between the biker and the police patrol team has also gone viral on social media, sparking public reactions over the conduct of the officers during the stop-and-search operation. The police said it had commenced an investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to the statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abutu Sunday, the complaint was received at the Ilupeju Police Division on October 6, 2026.
The complainants alleged that one of their members, who was riding alone from Itapa to Ikole-Ekiti, was intercepted by a police patrol team and subjected to an alleged demand for money under circumstances they considered improper.
The command said preliminary inquiries commenced immediately after the complaint was received and that the officers involved were identified and taken into custody for questioning.
“The circumstances surrounding the alleged extortion, intimidation and other acts of unprofessional conduct are being thoroughly investigated,” the police said.
The Commissioner of Police in Ekiti State, CP Falade Adegoroye Micheal, has also directed that the officers be subjected to appropriate disciplinary procedures in line with the regulations and disciplinary provisions of the Nigeria Police Force, subject to the outcome of the investigation.
The matter has since been transferred to the State Police Headquarters in Ado-Ekiti for what the command described as a discreet, comprehensive and impartial investigation.
The police said the investigation was aimed at establishing the facts and taking appropriate action in accordance with the law.
The command condemned extortion, intimidation, abuse of authority and other conduct capable of undermining public confidence in the police.
According to the police, no officer is authorized to demand or collect money from members of the public under any guise while carrying out legitimate police duties.
