On April 27, 2023, Wendpouire Charles Sawadogo, a whistleblower and activist, was arrested and accused of “intelligence with foreigners” to destabilize the country. He was placed in custody and later released 96 hours later.
Sawadogo had previously published alerts about the Karma massacre, a violent incident that raised significant human rights concerns. Following his reports, he was summoned by the Central Brigade for the Fight Against Cybercrime, indicating an attempt by authorities to silence critical voices exposing sensitive security matters.
His arrest highlights the increasing crackdown on whistleblowers and press freedom in Burkina Faso, as well as the risks faced by those who report on human rights violations.
