Freetown, Sierra Leone – Police arrested dozens of women yesterday after they participated in a peaceful protest in the capital, Freetown, against the government’s economic policies. Protesters argue that these policies are worsening the impact of the global economic downturn and contributing to the soaring cost of living across the country.
The demonstration drew hundreds of women into the streets, with shops and markets shutting down in solidarity with millions of struggling households. The commercial district of Freetown was described as a “ghost town” as shoppers stayed home in what protesters dubbed “Black Monday.”
Disturbing videos circulating on social media show women being beaten inside police stations and molested by male officers. Some officers were reportedly heard shouting: “Now you will rot behind bars.”
The arrests and reported mistreatment of protesters have sparked outrage among rights groups and activists, who are calling for an immediate investigation into police brutality and the unconditional release of the detained women.
Actions Taken
In a press release on 6th July 2022, the Sierra Leone Police said they had released 57 protesters without charge, as it was their first offence.
